Sometimes it pays to play. It certainly did for a Norlina couple who won $200,000 from the North Carolina Education Lottery after buying a $10 scratch-off ticket.
William Perry and his wife “had to pinch each other to make sure it was real,” he told WRAL on Monday. "It’s like I was walking around in a trance. I was in disbelief.”
Perry bought a scratch-off ticket for the Bigger Spin game from Kittrell Grocery on U.S. 1 South in Kittrell. He scratched the ticket when he got home and showed it to his wife.
As expected, Perry said his wife harbored some doubts initially.
“First, she had to check to make sure I was looking at it right,” he told WRAL. “Then she started jumping up and down, screaming.”
Perry claimed his prize on Friday at lottery headquarters, the WRAL report said. Taxes were withheld before the final payment, which left Perry with take-home winnings of $142,023.
The plan is not to spend it superfluously, but rather to try to reap rewards in the future.
Perry noted that much of the check will go into a money market account, with the goal of having something left over to leave to the children and grandchildren later.
The Bigger Spin game began in September, offering five $200,000 instant prizes, the report said.
