CITY OF RALEIGH: Names new Chief Information Officer

City of Raleigh issued the following announcement on Sept. 8.

After a nationwide search, the City of Raleigh has selected Mark Wittenburg as its new Chief Information Officer. Mr. Wittenburg served as the Chief Information Officer for the City of Tempe, Arizona and will bring over thirty years of IT experience to the City of Raleigh, effective September 26.

Mr. Wittenburg has extensive public sector experience. In Arizona, he helped advance initiatives such as advancing regional digital equity by accelerating 5G and fiber installation, deploying smart water meters to conserve water, and building an organizational culture that embraces innovation. Understanding that decisions are based on accurate data, he built the model for the City of Tempe Mayor’s Data and Transparency Pillar to bring greater data governance to policing, build community trust through data transparency and equity, and build efficiencies between multiple departments responsible for public safety and community health.

As Mr. Wittenburg transitions into his role, he plans to bring that same passion for public service to the City of Raleigh, leveraging thoughtful and appropriate technology to advance the priorities of the community.

"I am pleased to announce Mark Wittenburg as the City's next Chief Information Officer," said City Manager Marchell Adams-David. "Mr. Wittenburg is a progressive IT professional, who leads with both innovation and equity in mind. His ability to build strong relationships at all levels of the organization, and in the community, aligns perfectly with the needs of our organization."

“I look forward to this incredible opportunity to serve the community of Raleigh and regional partners. The people I have met here have been so welcoming and clearly proud of their city," said Wittenburg. "I am excited to work with such a collaborative and visionary team of professionals. I’m energized by the prospect of learning where my skills can be of the best and highest use in this world-class organization."

Mr. Wittenburg holds a Master of Arts in Education as well as a Bachelor of Science in Information Technology from the University of Phoenix, where he is also an adjunct professor. His wife Kathy, daughter JC, and dogs Chewy and Luke look forward to calling Raleigh home. As an avid outdoors family, they can’t wait to explore all the beauty North Carolina has to offer.
