The shooting death of a teenager on Halloween night rocked relatives and the school the victim attended, with the school expressing “great sadness” over the tragedy.
“I had to go to WakeMed, with his ID, to identify my 16-year-old grandbaby on Halloween,” Consuela Perry, grandmother of the slain child, told CBS17.com.
Xzavion Lawton “died last night in a tragic shooting,” Millbrook High School said in its Tuesday statement, making the announcement with “great sadness.”
Lawton was initially in serious condition after the shooting. He was one of three shooting victims in the incident, which happened at about 9:15 p.m. Monday, Raleigh police said. The other two victims were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment after the shooting along Sumner Boulevard, with one in serious condition and the other suffering non-life-threatening injuries.
Lawton was a 16-year-old junior at Millbrook.
“Our condolences, thoughts and prayers go out to his family and his friends,” the school said in its statement.
Perry said Lawton was trick-or-treating with his friends but never made it home for dinner. She described her grandson as respectful, adding that he loved his friends and family, joking around and playing football.
“We are trying to hold it together because we have a long way to go," she told CBS17.com.
The family sent a heartfelt message out: “Just put the guns down. If you can’t rectify the situation in a peaceful manner, then go about your business, but just stop the violence with these guns, taking people’s lives,” Perry said, according to CBS17.com.
Millbrook will offer counseling services for students who want to talk about Lawton or the stress associated with a violent death of a classmate or friend.
