CITY OF RALEIGH: Winter Athletic Field Closures Upcoming

City of Raleigh Parksissued the following announcement on Dec. 5.

The City of Raleigh Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources department is resting selected fields during the winter. The goal is to prevent winter damage so that citizens can enjoy healthy, resilient fields that are safe for play in the spring.

Beginning December 12, the following fields will be closed for winter and will reopen for spring on February 13, 2023:

Multi-purpose fields

Halifax Park

Kiwanis Park (fields 1 and 2)

Method Community Park

Peter Williams Park

Ball fields

Biltmore Hills Park (field 2)

Brentwood Park

Carolina Pines Park (fields 1 and 2)

Cedar Hills Park

John Chavis Memorial Park

Green Road Park (field 1)

Honeycutt Park

Jaycee Park (fields 1 and 3)

Lake Lynn Park

Laurel Hills Park (fields 1 and 2)

Lions Park (fields 1, 2, and 4)

Marsh Creek Park

Millbrook Exchange Park (fields 1 and 2)

North Hills Park

Oakwood Park (field 2)

Optimist Park (fields 1 and 3)

Pullen Park (field 1)

Sanderford Road Park (field 1)

Spring Forest Road Park

Worthdale Park (field 2)

Limiting the usage of City of Raleigh athletic fields has become an essential variable to be considered in the long-term maintenance and playability of athletic spaces. Use and overuse of fields during the winter season, when fields stay perpetually wet or worse yet have a daily freeze/thaw status, is having a lasting impact on playability. Even more critical is the result of fields that are unable to be used as we enter into the peak season of programming and use in the spring.
