With COVID-19, flu and other respiratory illnesses this season, Wake County is taking steps to make sure people get tested for free so the problem can be identified and properly fought off.
Health officials are expecting a surge in respiratory ailments in the coming days or weeks as the disease was likely spread during holiday gatherings. With that in mind, the county is offering free drive-through testing.
"I just woke up this morning with some symptoms, and I'm here just because of the free testing,” Melanie Cobos told WTVD after taking advantage of the test late last week. “I work in healthcare, so I just want to make sure that I'm clear to be able to return home.”
Officials already saw an uptick in cases after Thanksgiving. Wake County Health Department has teamed up with Mako Medical to organize drive-through testing.
A couple more days of free tests are on the schedule. Kirk of Kildaire Presbyterian Church on High Meadow Drive in Cary will hold testing Tuesday and Monday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Registration is not required, but it is recommended.
The free test will require one nasal swab, which will be used to test for both COVID-19 and the flu, and results will be returned to the person tested in one to two days.
