County of Wake issued the following announcement on Jan. 12.

With the snip of their golden scissors, leaders from the Wake County Board of Commissioners and the justice system officially opened the Legal Support Center today in downtown Raleigh!

The center will serve residents who can't afford an attorney or choose to represent themselves but need help navigating the complexities of the courts - all for free.

Residents can walk up to the customer service desk, sign in on a tablet and explain their situation to the Legal Support Center staff. The team will immediately start working to get these residents on the right path.

Staff may provide handouts that explain what to expect throughout the legal process, what deadlines might apply to them and what laws are relevant to their case.

Or, they may guide visitors to the computers set up alongside the customer service desk, help them pull up the forms they need, and explain how to fill them out and where to turn them in.

Staff may also point residents to the on-site notary to get official documents signed, so they can swiftly take the next step in their legal journey.

The center is open Monday-Friday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Room 125 of the Wake County Courthouse at 316 Fayetteville Street.
