City of Raleigh issued the following announcement on March 23.

After an extensive search, the City of Raleigh has selected William (Whit) Wheeler as its new Director of Raleigh Water.

Whit Wheeler has served as the Interim Director for Raleigh Water since Jan. 1, 2022. He joined the City of Raleigh in 2008 as an engineer overseeing capital improvement projects within the Public Utilities Department. For the past decade he has served as an Assistant Director overseeing water operations and has represented the city at the Triangle Water Supply Partnership, Water Research Foundation Research Advisory Group, N.C. Underground Damage Prevention Review Board, N.C. Urban Water Consortium, and the Upper Neuse Basin Association.

“I am excited to welcome Whit to his leadership role with the City of Raleigh,” said City Manager Marchell Adams-David. “Whit has provided tremendous leadership as interim director, and I look forward to his contributions to Raleigh Water’s stability and growth.”

Mr. Wheeler is an experienced water industry professional with a 28-year distinguished background in private engineering consultancy and the government utility industry. As a consulting engineer, he was the project manager and Engineer of Record for the City of Raleigh’s Dempsey E. Benton Water Treatment Plant. He is a licensed professional engineer in the state of North Carolina and holds a bachelor of science and a master of science in civil engineering from North Carolina State University.

“I look forward to leading Raleigh Water into the future. We face several challenges serving our growing community, and Raleigh Water will continue to meet them,” said Wheeler. “Our team will continue to be great innovators, collaborators, and environmental stewards, and will continue to provide our community with the best tasting, safest drinking water in North Carolina.”

Mr. Wheeler’s first scheduled day in his new role is April 8.
