The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality's Division of Water Resources (DWR) is addressing an animal waste spill in Duplin County, affecting Doctors Creek. The incident occurred at Murphy Brown LLC Farm 6703 & 6704 on Kenan Loop Road in Wallace due to a malfunction in equipment that pumps waste between lagoons. This resulted in approximately 84,000 gallons of waste spilling into an unnamed tributary of Doctors Creek, which flows into the Northeast Cape Fear River.

The spill began early on Saturday, February 15, and continued until early Sunday, February 16. The permittee took action by removing the waste from the tributary and returning it to a secondary lagoon on the farm site. DWR staff have confirmed these cleanup actions and conducted sampling at various points to assess water quality impacts from the spill. It was noted that no public water system surface water intakes are located along the affected path.

DWR will maintain monitoring of water quality in the area. Information regarding future actions related to this spill will be documented and made available in the permit file on Laserfiche.
