PRIDE month provides an opportunity to honor the resilience and legacy of the LGBTQIA+ community, from the Stonewall Protest of 1969 to the AIDS Epidemic to the 2015 landmark Supreme Court decision in Obergefell v. Hodges. Closer to home, we recognize the historical legacy of the Warehouse District, which has served as an epicenter of Queer identity formation and belonging since the mid-1970s.
The narratives we highlight during PRIDE serve as an important reminder that LGBTQIA+ rights are Human Rights. During the month of June, we are also reminded of our individual and collective responsibility to break stigmas and dismantle barriers facing our LGBTQIA+ family. While PRIDE is a time to celebrate victories and progress, our organization remains committed to embedding equity throughout both our organization and community. The City of Raleigh proudly recognizes that we are a more inclusive and dynamic city because of the work, lives, and contributions of the LGBTQIA+ community.
We kindly invite you to explore upcoming local events and connect with organizations dedicated to educating and offering resources for the LGBTQIA+ community, including the Out Raleigh Pride Celebration on June 24, 2023. The City of Raleigh encourages you to use this month - and every month - to stand in solidarity and take pride in LGBTQIA+ identity.
