New Programs at Durant and Horseshoe Farm Nature Preserves

Durant and Horseshoe Farm Nature Preserves are offering new programs for nature enthusiasts of all ages. These programs aim to provide educational and engaging experiences while exploring the beauty of the preserves.

One of the upcoming events at Durant Nature Preserve is the Campfire Story and Marshmallow Roast on Friday, January 12th, from 5 to 6 p.m. This event will bring people together around a campfire to share stories, connect with nature, and enjoy the company of others. The program fee is $5, and both children and adults must preregister on RecLink.

Another exciting program at Durant Nature Preserve is Winter Birds on Saturday, January 20th, from 10 a.m. to noon. Participants will learn about the different bird species that reside in the preserve during the winter months. This program offers an opportunity to observe and appreciate these winter residents. Binoculars are recommended, and pre-registration is required.

For those interested in the hidden world of organisms that thrive in the winter, Life Among the Fallen Leaves is an ideal program. Taking place on Saturday, January 20th, from 2 to 4 p.m., participants will explore the leaf litter and discover the various organisms that call it home during the winter season. This program is open to individuals aged 6 and above, and adults must accompany children. Pre-registration is required.

On Wednesday, January 24th, from 5 to 6 p.m., Durant Nature Preserve will host a program titled Winter Sleep-Hibernation and Suspended Animation. This program aims to shed light on the fascinating processes of hibernation and suspended animation that many creatures undergo during the winter. Participants will learn why and how animals enter these states and when it occurs. Pre-registration is required for this program, which is open to individuals aged 10 and above.

At Horseshoe Farm Nature Preserve, nature enthusiasts can witness the mesmerizing Woodcock Aerial Ballet. Taking place on Wednesday, January 31st, from 5 to 7 p.m., this program offers the opportunity to observe the graceful aerial dance of male woodcocks as they attract mates during the winter and early spring. Participants are advised to bring binoculars and a warm coat. This program is open to individuals aged 12 and above, and pre-registration is required.

These programs provide an excellent opportunity for individuals and families to connect with nature, learn about the local wildlife, and appreciate the beauty of the preserves.
