The Raleigh City Council has reaffirmed its commitment to affordable housing by approving funding for two significant projects. On Tuesday, the council voted to allocate funds for new homes in the Cottages of Idlewild and renovations at the Studios at 2800.
In February, the council had already approved the city's first affordable "cottage court" development, setting the stage for the Cottages of Idlewild. This week, they authorized $1.26 million to construct 18 affordable homes within this development. Of these, 14 will be available for purchase and four for rent, with affordability maintained for at least 99 years. The project aims to ensure that future generations have access to affordable housing.
Additionally, in 2021, Raleigh acquired a 119-room hotel on Brentwood Road, now known as the Studios at 2800. This facility offers both extended-stay rooms and permanent affordable housing units. After identifying critical repair needs at this property, the city council approved a $1 million renovation project. The updates will include new plumbing, heating systems, electrical work, doors, and windows. Shepherd Response, LLC has been awarded the contract to carry out these essential repairs.
These initiatives are expected to provide safe and affordable housing options for residents of Raleigh. More information can be found by visiting RaleighNC.gov and searching for "affordable housing."
