The City of Raleigh has introduced a new safety measure at the Lake Johnson Park crosswalk on Avent Ferry Road. This crosswalk links a trail to the parking lot at the park's entrance.

The newly installed feature is known as a Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon (RRFB). It consists of warning lights attached to the sign next to the crosswalk. When pedestrians press a button, these lights flash to alert drivers that someone intends to cross.

According to the Federal Highway Administration, RRFBs are recognized as an effective safety tool. They significantly increase the likelihood that drivers will stop for pedestrians. Studies indicate that installing RRFBs can reduce pedestrian accidents by about 50%.

To activate the beacon, pedestrians should press the button. The flashing lights will signal drivers, who should then stop before pedestrians proceed across.

This enhancement was implemented by Raleigh's Signs and Pavement Markings group alongside their Traffic Signals group. Their efforts aim to make crossing safer and more convenient for those accessing the trail.

Additionally, it is noted that RRFBs are typically used at pedestrian crossings not controlled by traffic signals outside intersections. Raleigh Transportation has already installed 11 such beacons throughout various city locations.
