Longtime Raleigh resident Wanda Statum, who lives on a fixed income, sometimes struggles with her monthly expenses. To address this issue, she participated in a pilot program run by the City of Raleigh that aims to alleviate energy costs through solar energy.

Statum was among nearly a dozen residents selected for the initiative as part of the Solarize the Triangle campaign. The one-year pilot program provides free rooftop solar systems to qualifying homeowners.

The program supports Raleigh's goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 80 percent by 2050, address equity and environmental justice issues, and build community resilience against climate change impacts. It also seeks to lower electricity bills for participating homeowners and renters through the installation of solar PV systems.

Raleigh is collaborating with the Central Pines Regional Council and Yes Solar for these installations.

Watch Statum discuss how the program has impacted her life in a new video release.
