The Carolina Hurricanes faced a challenging defeat against the Colorado Avalanche on Saturday, ending their eight-game winning streak. Despite Jordan Martinook scoring twice and Martin Necas extending his point streak to nine games, the Hurricanes fell 6-4 at Ball Arena in Denver.
The game took a turn during the second period when Colorado scored five goals, overcoming a 3-2 lead that Carolina had maintained midway through the match. Jack Drury opened the scoring for the Hurricanes with a one-timer after receiving a pass from Martinook. Later, Martinook scored again early in the second period with Seth Jarvis assisting.
Colorado quickly responded with two goals in under two minutes, tying the game before Necas restored Carolina's lead with a power-play goal. However, Colorado's offensive burst late in the second period gave them a lead they held onto for the rest of the game. Martinook added another goal early in the third period, but Mikko Rantanen secured Colorado's victory with an empty-net goal.
Spencer Martin made his first NHL appearance of the season as Carolina's goaltender, recording 23 saves out of 28 shots. Despite travel delays that saw Carolina arriving in Colorado on Saturday morning, they started strong by outshooting their opponents 14-6 in the first period and taking an initial 2-0 lead.
Martinook reflected on their performance: "Our first period was really good...If you could take away eight minutes of that game, I think we're pretty happy. But it's a 60-minute game." Head coach Rod Brind'Amour pointed to specific moments that impacted their loss: "The shorthanded goal (by Cale Makar) killed us...Those two things kind of flipped the game for us."
Martin praised Spencer Martin's performance: "I thought he was great...It sucks. I wish we could have done better for him because I thought he played incredible."
The Hurricanes are set to practice on Sunday before facing Vegas on Monday.
