Space heaters, if not used properly, can pose a significant fire hazard. The Raleigh Fire Department and the National Fire Protection Association have provided safety guidelines to help prevent accidents.
It is advised to maintain a three-foot safety zone around space heaters, keeping them away from flammable materials such as furniture, blankets, curtains, and papers. Selecting space heaters with automatic shut-off features that activate when the heater tips over can reduce fire risks.
Space heaters should be plugged directly into wall sockets rather than extension cords or power strips to ensure they receive sufficient power and minimize overheating risks. Additionally, turning off space heaters when leaving a room or going to sleep is crucial for safety.
Before using a space heater, inspect it for damage. Do not use it if there are frayed wires or malfunctions. To prevent burns and injuries, children and pets should be kept at least three feet away from heaters.
For fuel-burning heaters, proper ventilation is essential to avoid carbon monoxide buildup. Following the manufacturer's instructions for installation and use is recommended. Regular maintenance by professionals ensures heating equipment remains in good working condition.
Lt. Lemuel Hubbard of the Raleigh Fire Department emphasizes the importance of these precautions: “By following these simple steps you can enjoy a warm and safe winter season,” he said. “Stay safe, and keep your family protected!”
