Duke Energy has announced updates to its assistance programs aimed at supporting customers facing financial difficulties in paying their utility bills. In 2024, the company provided nearly $90 million in energy bill assistance to over 114,000 households in North Carolina through various programs.

Kendal Bowman, Duke Energy North Carolina state president, emphasized the company's commitment: "We realize that many of our customers are facing challenging times, and we are committed to finding ways to support them. Our payment assistance and energy and money-saving programs are designed to offer relief and help manage energy costs."

The updated programs for 2025 include increased incentives for weatherization efforts. The HVAC replacement incentive has been raised from $6,000 to $8,000, while refrigerator replacement incentives have increased from $1,000 to $1,500. The program has also expanded its service providers and eligibility criteria.

A new demand response program is now available for income-qualified customers who use electric heat. This program offers a free smart thermostat installation and provides bill credits up to $150 for shifting energy use during peak demand periods.

Additionally, the Neighborhood Energy Saver program offers walk-through assessments and free energy-saving products. Qualifying neighborhoods must have at least 50% of residents with an income below 200% of federal poverty guidelines.

In 2024 alone, Duke Energy's initiatives like Share the Light Fund and Customer Assistance Program (CAP) aided thousands with substantial financial support. These efforts were complemented by federal funding sources such as the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP).

Duke Energy continues offering resources like CAP—a 12-month program providing monthly credits—and installment plans for manageable payment solutions. The company also promotes energy conservation through usage alerts and cost-effective tips for household efficiency.

For more information on these initiatives or guidance on reading utility bills, customers can visit Duke Energy's Winter Energy Savings webpage or contact their customer service.

Duke Energy Carolinas operates within a large service area across North Carolina and South Carolina with significant energy capacity. As one of America's largest energy holding companies headquartered in Charlotte, N.C., Duke Energy is progressing toward net-zero emissions goals by investing in cleaner generation methods.
