Governor Josh Stein has announced that Provalus, an information technology outsourcing firm, will establish a Center of Excellence in Edenton, creating 61 jobs. The project involves an investment of $6.48 million in Chowan County and adds to the company's existing presence in North Carolina.
“Companies like Provalus that need skilled workers recognize North Carolina offers talent in great small-town locations like Edenton,” said Governor Josh Stein. He emphasized the state's workforce, education system, business climate, and infrastructure as factors for success.
Provalus, founded in 2017 and operating under Optomi, LLC, focuses on creating technology opportunities in areas with limited access. By developing talent in rural and veteran-heavy communities, Provalus aims to build a dedicated workforce. The new facility will renovate a former Sears store into a Center of Excellence to meet client demands in cybersecurity, application development, and network operations. Provalus also operates facilities in North Wilkesboro and Whiteville.
“This new Center of Excellence represents more than just business growth; it’s a testament to our commitment to empowering communities and unlocking potential,” stated Mike Keogh, President of Provalus. He expressed pride in bringing their mission to Edenton and creating opportunities for local residents.
Commerce Secretary Lee Lilley highlighted the state’s focus on veteran employment: “As a military-friendly state with a deep pool of talented veterans, it’s great to see a company proactively tap into that strength.”
The average salary for these new positions will be $46,393 compared to Chowan County's current average wage of $46,384.
A grant from the One North Carolina Fund will provide $150,000 towards facilitating this project. This fund assists local governments by attracting economic investment without upfront payments; companies must meet specific targets for job creation and capital investment.
N.C. Representative Edward Goodwin welcomed the investment: “With today’s news, our community will see more economic vitality in Edenton.” Similarly, N.C. Senator Norman Sanderson remarked on North Carolina's business-friendly environment: “Once again, North Carolina proves why it’s one of the top states for business.”
The initiative is supported by several partners including the North Carolina Department of Commerce and various educational institutions such as East Carolina University and Elizabeth City State University.
