Governor Josh Stein has made a formal request for $19 billion in federal aid to support recovery efforts following the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene in western North Carolina. The Governor discussed the need for substantial investments with Senators Thom Tillis and Ted Budd during a meeting on Thursday, emphasizing the urgency of rebuilding efforts in the region.
Governor Stein highlighted the extensive damage inflicted by Hurricane Helene, stating that it had "destroyed so much across western North Carolina – lives, homes, businesses, farms, and infrastructure," leading to nearly $60 billion in damages. Despite initial responses from various sectors including federal, state, local governments as well as private and nonprofit organizations, he stressed that further assistance is crucial for restoration.
The Governor's appeal for federal funds aims to support several key areas: rebuilding homes, restoring critical infrastructure, maintaining business operations, strengthening local governments, and mitigating future natural disaster impacts. He noted that "the state has already committed more than $1 billion in funding" and is collaborating with the legislature to secure additional resources.
Stein expressed confidence in the combined efforts of federal and state governments to help western North Carolina recover stronger than before: "With continued commitment of the federal and state governments, we will enable the people of western North Carolina to come back stronger than ever before."
