A well-known trail at DuPont State Recreational Forest is temporarily closed due to improvement work. The Burnt Mountain Trail, which spans two and a half miles, is being upgraded to better handle the high volume of recreational use it receives. The upgrades aim to enhance trail sustainability, reduce erosion, and protect the water quality of nearby streams and creeks.
Jane Dauster, a recreation specialist for the forest, stated, "We are excited to invest in this valuable trail for generations to come." She explained that new features are being added to improve water drainage and that rock armoring has been used in several sections to stabilize the trail surface.
Rock armoring involves using natural stone on parts of the trail surface. This technique helps maintain the trails' character while improving sustainability and environmental protection.
Jason Guidry, forest supervisor at DuPont State Recreational Forest, noted that "Improvements to Burnt Mountain Trail will protect the natural areas surrounding the trail while enhancing the recreational experience for multiple user groups."
The trail will remain closed during these improvements, with work expected to continue until April 30. Visitors planning a trip to DuPont State Recreational Forest are advised to check www.dupontstaterecreationalforest.com for updates on trail closures.
