Today, the MICHELIN Guide announced its expansion into the Southern region of the United States with the launch of the MICHELIN Guide American South. This new regional edition will cover Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and the existing Atlanta Guide. The aim is to explore beyond major urban centers to highlight the authentic food culture of the American South.
Gwendal Poullennec, International Director of the MICHELIN Guides, expressed enthusiasm for this new venture: "We are excited to embark on this new journey for the MICHELIN Guide as this will be the first time since the Guide’s North American debut in 2005 that we are launching a regional selection." He emphasized that Southern cuisine is a unique blend of diverse influences and culinary talent.
The MICHELIN Guide’s anonymous inspectors are already active in these regions, making dining reservations and searching for notable culinary experiences. The full list of selected restaurants will be revealed during an annual ceremony.
Liz Bittner, president & CEO of Travel South USA, said: "Travel South USA is thrilled to support the MICHELIN Guide coming to the American South. Our region has long deserved global recognition for its extraordinary farm-to-table cuisine." She also thanked state tourism offices and destinations for their participation in this initiative.
The selection process will adhere to Michelin's historical methodology based on five criteria: quality products; harmony of flavors; mastery of cooking techniques; chef's personality reflected in cuisine; and consistency across visits and menu offerings.
Michelin first published its guide in France at the turn of the 20th century. Since then, it has expanded globally while maintaining its original criteria. The first North American guide was introduced in New York in 2005.
Michelin North America is headquartered in Greenville, S.C., employing approximately 23,500 people across 36 production facilities in North America. Travel South USA was formed in 1965 and represents a collaboration among several Southern states' tourism offices.
