Today, Governor Josh Stein expressed disappointment following the Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) decision to deny North Carolina's request for a 180-day extension on the 100 percent match reimbursement period for Helene disaster recovery.
"Today, I learned that FEMA refused our request to extend its 100% reimbursement period for another 180 days," said Governor Stein. "I got this news while I was in Newland with families who lost their homes in the storm."
Governor Stein emphasized the ongoing need for assistance in western North Carolina, remarking, "The need in western North Carolina remains immense — people need debris removed, homes rebuilt, and roads restored."
He urged the President to reconsider this decision, suggesting an alternative, "I am extremely disappointed and urge the President to reconsider FEMA’s bad decision, even for 90 days."
Nearly six months after the storm, Governor Stein highlighted the efforts of residents in western North Carolina to return to normalcy. "Six months later," he stated, "the people of western North Carolina are working hard to get back on their feet; they need FEMA to help them get the job done."
