The United States will soon pause again to remember the tragic events of September 11. This year marks the 22nd anniversary of 9/11. The anniversary commemorations of the terror attacks that killed almost 3,000 Americans will occur in New York City, Virginia, and Shanksville, Pa. Several communities are also planning 9/11 anniversary observances and there are various ways for you to commemorate the day.

Higgins Greenway Trail Invasive Plant Removal Project Launches-Temporary Greenway Shutdown

In support of our commitment to healthy urban forests and clean waterways, Cary will be performing an environmental project along the Higgins Greenway Trail from September 11 through the spring of 2024. The project will include removing non-native invasive plants in order to support the best health of the existing native forests that surround the greenway trail. The work will be performed in stages so that portions of the greenway trail will remain open for the duration of the project. Please visit our project page to learn the specific locations of existing closures and to discover how you can join us in growing Cary's urban forests by supporting native plants and wildlife in your own yard!

My Tree, Our Tree

This fall we are giving away 1,000 trees to Cary residents to add to their landscape and our community’s canopy! To be more fair and equitable, we will utilize a lottery system this fall. The lottery will open at noon on Tuesday, September 26 and close at noon on Sunday, October 1. There's no need to rush to complete the lottery form right when the lottery opens; as long as you submit the form by noon on October 1, you'll have the same chance as others to receive a tree. You will be able to rank the trees in order of preference, so go check out the descriptions of available trees to make your list of which ones will work in your yard. For the descriptions and information about pickup visit carync.gov/mytreeourtree

At 8:40-8:45 a.m. Personnel will gather and fire apparatus operators will activate warning lights on all units.

At 8:46 a.m. ECC alert tone and announcement will be heard on radios, which will be followed by a 1-minute moment of silence. (8:46 a.m. was the time Flight 11 crashed into the North Tower).

The Raleigh Police Department will also observe a moment of silence in front of district stations at 8:46 a.m.
