The City of Raleigh was awarded a $1,000,000 Urban and Community Forestry grant through the Inflation Reduction Act to help increase equitable access to trees and their many benefits. Urban trees and forests help mitigate extreme heat, conserve energy, provide shade, absorb stormwater, create wildlife habitat, and filter air and water. Raleigh is one of 385 awarded projects where 100% of funding will go towards tree planting and maintenance in areas of greatest need.
The City of Raleigh will conduct community outreach and education, tree maintenance, and planting in vulnerable communities along streets, parks, and other City-owned property. The multi-year project aims to provide environmental and aesthetic benefits, provide new canopy, improve tree health and resiliency, and address safety concerns through tree maintenance, planting, and hazardous tree removal.
