The City of Raleigh Information Technology Department was presented with the Enterprise GIS Award during Esri’s 2024 International User Conference on July 15.

The City’s Geographic Information System (GIS) platform is centrally managed within the IT department but has key users across other city departments. These staff provide support, consulting, analysis, apps, and tools to the City and the public. GIS technology is used to create, manage, analyze, and map various data types to help users understand patterns, relationships, and geographic context. It is fundamental to the City’s strategic plan with focus areas including transportation, economic development, natural resources, health and safety, and arts and culture.

“The prestigious Enterprise GIS Award is a testament to the City team's dedication, innovation, and hard work in leveraging GIS to enhance our city,” said City of Raleigh’s GIS and Emerging Technology Manager James Alberque.

The City of Raleigh was acknowledged with this award because they have transformed from an ordinary GIS department focused on foundation and transactional requests to integrating GIS with most City services. The IT department is committed to enterprise and departmental geospatial work (data associated with a specific location), innovative research and development efforts, maintaining a strong partnership with Esri while increasing government efficiency, engagement, and transparency.

Examples of GIS use include:

- The City's Emergency Management using ArcGIS online dashboards and real-time data from GeoEvent and Living Atlas when responding to emergencies;

- Raleigh Water using ArcGIS Indoors to manage assets and integration with Cityworks;

- A citywide equity explorer project that helps improve departmental workflows;

- Geo-equity projects focused on housing justice and environmental justice.

Raleigh’s core city services highlight how innovation through research leads to enhanced government experiences for employees and the public.
