The City of Raleigh has announced that Ryan Bergman, strategy and budget director for the City of Charlotte, will join as Assistant City Manager on August 26.
Mr. Bergman has served in his current role with the City of Charlotte since 2019, including 11 months where he took on the additional role of interim Assistant City Manager. In addition to delivering six balanced budgets, he planned and managed more than $300 million in federal stimulus funds from the COVID-19 pandemic, led compensation and benefit initiatives, and helped to develop and manage Charlotte’s steady state bond program to maintain its AAA credit rating.
“I am pleased to welcome Ryan to the City of Raleigh family," said Marchell Adams-David, Raleigh City Manager. "I appreciate his demonstrated commitment to local government service and look forward to the strategic focus and insight he will bring to the City Manager’s Office. With his leadership experience and expertise in budget and strategy development, he is well-positioned to help align the City’s day-to-day operations with our overall strategy and goals.”
Prior to joining the City of Charlotte, Mr. Bergman served as the county administrator for Delta County in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. In that role, he initiated financial and management changes that improved the County’s financial health and future outlook. Mr. Bergman served as a city management intern for the City of Ishpeming, MI, began his local government career as a grants coordinator in York County, VA, and assumed increasingly responsible roles in communities in both Virginia and Michigan before coming to North Carolina.
“I am excited about the opportunity to join the leadership team of such a well-regarded organization,” Mr. Bergman said. “I look forward to learning everything I can about Raleigh and hope to positively contribute to its future in every way that I can."
The City's Budget, Finance, Human Resources, Information Technology departments along with the Offices of Internal Audit and Strategy and Innovation will comprise Mr. Bergman's portfolio.
Mr. Bergman has a Bachelor of Science in Political Science/Economics and a Master of Public Administration from Northern Michigan University. In his free time, Ryan enjoys football, baseball, and history. He is married to Kristine; they have three children – Griffin, Carson, and Emily.
