Raleigh's transportation department is advancing several bike and pedestrian projects aimed at enhancing infrastructure throughout the city. These initiatives include new bikeway connections, improvements to existing bike lanes, traffic calming measures, and the addition of sidewalks and raised crosswalks near schools.
The Bike and Pedestrian Program has multiple projects currently under construction, with completion dates set for 2024 and 2025. Six of these projects are located in school zones:
- Enhanced bike lanes at Country Trail
- Enhanced bike lanes and pedestrian crossing at Dixie Trail
- Traffic calming and neighborhood bikeway enhancements at Bertie Drive
- Traffic calming and neighborhood bikeway enhancements at Cooper Road
- Traffic calming and sidewalk connections at Wild Wood Forest Drive
- Buffered bike lanes and raised crosswalks at Saint Mary’s Street
Beyond school zones, neighborhood bikeway connections are being developed to link greenways along White Oak Road, Mackinac Island Lanes, and Cooper Road.
The Bike and Pedestrian Program has collaborated with the Neighborhood Traffic Management Program and the City’s Annual Resurfacing Program to implement several of these projects:
- Buffered bike lanes on Willow Oak Road, connecting the neighborhood to their community center
- Cycle-track on Donald Ross Drive to calm traffic and connect to the future New Bern BRT system
- Neighborhood bikeways along Quail Ridge Road, Sierra Drive, Jacqueline Lane, Latimer Road, Marthonna Way, and Shannon Street
