Raleigh Water has been recognized for its high-quality drinking water, having earned the Best Tasting Water award at the NC One Water Conferences in 2022 and 2023. Additionally, Raleigh Water was rated third best in an international taste-testing competition.
The city's annual water quality report confirms full compliance with all safe drinking water standards. Furthermore, Raleigh Water has taken measures to exceed current regulatory requirements. These include lowering levels of PFAS using state-of-the-art powder activated carbon feed systems to keep these chemicals below EPA's new limits.
Raleigh Water is also improving overall plant processes to meet the stringent requirements of the Partnership for Safe Water. The Dempsey Benton Water Treatment Plant has received the Presidents Award, and efforts are underway to achieve this standard for the EM Johnson plant.
Significant investments are being made to upgrade treatment facilities and replace old or poor-condition water lines, fire hydrants, and water valves, with approximately $353 million allocated for these improvements.
Regarding water hardness, Raleigh’s tap water falls into the soft category due to low levels of dissolved calcium and magnesium. As a result, residents do not need an in-home water softening system.
