Duke Energy is preparing for an upcoming winter storm that may lead to power outages in certain areas due to a mix of snow and ice. The company is monitoring weather forecasts closely.

"As snowy and icy conditions approach, we’re encouraging customers to prepare and have a plan in place in case they experience a power outage," said Jason Hollifield, Duke Energy’s storm director in the Carolinas. "Our crews are prepared and will work as quickly and safely as possible to restore power if outages occur for our customers."

The accumulation of ice on trees, branches, and power lines could cause them to fall, leading to outages. Ice buildup of a quarter inch or more can result in such incidents. Additionally, heavy wet snow of six inches or more poses similar risks.

To mitigate these issues, Duke Energy has been implementing grid improvements like tree trimming around power lines, pole and line upgrades, and smart self-healing technology. This technology identifies outages quickly and reroutes power to restore service faster. In 2024 alone, it helped avoid over 1.2 million customer outages in the Carolinas.

For reporting outages during storms, customers can text OUT to 57801, use the Duke Energy mobile app, visit duke-energy.com/outages or call 800.POWERON (800.769.3766). An interactive outage map is also available for real-time updates.

Safety reminders for potential outages include keeping mobile phones charged and having supplies like flashlights, batteries, bottled water, nonperishable foods, and medicines ready. Customers using generators should follow safety instructions strictly.

As temperatures drop this week due to the storm's approach, Duke Energy offers energy-saving tips on its Winter Energy Savings webpage at duke-energy.com/WinterEnergySavings.

Duke Energy serves millions across several states with electric utilities while advancing its energy transition with investments in grid upgrades and cleaner generation methods like natural gas and renewables.
