Duke Energy Foundation has pledged $500,000 to enhance storm preparedness efforts in North Carolina communities. Organizations eligible for grants can apply for amounts up to $25,000 until April 25. The initiative aims to strengthen collaboration between emergency management agencies, first responders, and nonprofit organizations in the face of natural disasters.
"The impact of Hurricane Helene last fall showed us the importance of strong collaboration between emergency management agencies, first responders and nonprofit organizations when it comes to natural disasters," said Kendal Bowman, Duke Energy North Carolina state president. "We’re proud to support storm preparedness efforts in the communities we serve as they continue to grow and see new opportunities to bolster resilience to severe weather events."
The grants will fund various initiatives such as programs that encourage collaboration across different sectors for disaster response, innovative planning for extreme weather readiness, community engagement through trainings and materials, and specialized training for first responders.
Since 2020, Duke Energy Foundation has awarded nearly $5.6 million towards storm preparedness in North Carolina. Previous grants have supported projects like installing flood gauges in Wilmington, distributing weather radios in Raleigh's vulnerable neighborhoods, launching a public safety drone program in Person County, and acquiring equipment for Harrisburg’s swift water rescue team.
Applications are open until April 25 at 5 p.m. ET on the Duke Energy Foundation's website.
Duke Energy Foundation provides over $30 million annually in philanthropic support funded by Duke Energy shareholders.
