For those who have long desired the ability to write in their eBooks, the Kindle Scribe offers a solution. This device not only allows users to read but also provides a powerful notebook for planning and taking detailed notes.
The Kindle Scribe features a 10.2-inch glare-free screen with a crisp 300 ppi resolution and an auto-adjusting front light. Users can personalize their experience with adjustable warm light, font sizes, and line spacing. The first version of Kindle Scribe was released in 2022, equipped with either a Basic or Premium Pen for writing on the screen. The updated version released in 2024 includes an upgraded Premium Pen that feels like holding an actual pen, complete with a soft-tipped eraser.
"Kindle Scribe features Active Canvas, a new experience for taking notes in books," allowing users to write directly in the book with the Premium Pen. "You can also use Active Canvas to mark up Microsoft Word documents and other reflowable documents."
Beyond eBooks, Kindle Scribe supports creating notebooks, journals, and lists using 18 provided templates. Users can import PDF files and Microsoft Word documents through the web browser or Kindle app.
"There are three tools—the pen, highlighter, and eraser—and each one has five thickness options." These tools are available when writing sticky notes, notebooks, and PDFs.
The device is designed for both left- and right-handed users as it will auto-rotate based on how it is held.
"The new notebook summarization feature," powered by generative AI, "allows you to quickly create a synopsis of your notes." Additionally, an AI-powered refinement feature converts handwritten notes into script font for better legibility.
However, Kindle Scribe is not waterproof. It does not currently sync with storage services like OneNote or Google Drive but will soon allow document transfers directly from Microsoft Word.
Battery life varies depending on usage but generally lasts up to 12 weeks based on half-hour daily reading or three weeks based on half-hour daily writing. A full charge takes about 2.5 hours with a 9W USB-C power adapter.
