Raleigh has closed the Dix Park camp, marking a significant move in addressing homelessness. The closure, effective January 31, ensured that all 45 households residing there were provided with stable housing or had clear plans to secure it.

The initiative is part of the Bringing Neighbors Home Pilot Program, which aims to offer a structured approach to combat homelessness by assisting individuals in finding long-term housing and connecting them with essential services such as healthcare, job training, and mental health support.

This specific camp was chosen due to heightened health and safety concerns and its impending closure. The focus group conducted at the site aimed to better understand residents' needs and guide future strategies for tackling unsheltered homelessness in Raleigh.

Participants have been successfully housed or have established plans for relocation. This approach not only transforms lives but also proves cost-effective. Studies indicate potential taxpayer savings of up to $70,000 per person annually by reducing expenses on emergency services, law enforcement, and healthcare.

Following the camp's closure, Raleigh Parks will clean the area, remove hazardous materials, clear harmful plants, and install fencing for community safety. Outreach teams will continue supporting those needing assistance.

The program also facilitates family reunification. Participants shared stories of rekindling relationships with their children and grandchildren. One participant is now working full-time and seeking permanent housing to reunite with his three children. Another mother-daughter duo now lives close together thanks to the program's efforts.

The Bringing Neighbors Home Pilot Program demonstrates the impact of investing in people by providing hope and stability beyond mere housing solutions. Raleigh exemplifies how strategic planning can address affordable housing challenges effectively.
