South Carolina agencies and nonprofits can now apply for grants up to $20,000 from the Duke Energy Foundation. The 2025 Helping Emergency Response Organizations (HERO) Grant Program offers a total of $500,000 to support severe weather emergency preparedness in the state.

The program aims to aid communities in their response to weather-related disasters, such as Hurricane Helene, which had a significant impact on South Carolina. "This year’s HERO grants are designed to help fill gaps identified when responding to historic storms like Helene," said Tim Pearson, Duke Energy’s South Carolina president.

Applications for the grants are open until April 25. Eligible projects include equipment upgrades, communication tools, specialized training, planning initiatives, storm shelters and activities that benefit low-income communities. More information is available at duke-energy.com/SCHEROgrants.

Since its inception in 2022, the HERO Grant Program has provided critical support through 99 microgrants across South Carolina. Jim Baber from Hodges-Cokesbury Fire Department shared how previous grant funds helped during Hurricane Helene: “We used it for tree removal as well as delivering food, water and other necessities."

Mac McMakin of Travelers Rest Fire Department noted improvements due to last year's grant: “This gear made it easier for our responders to work efficiently and safely during recent storms.” Joshua Hawkins from Anderson County Sheriff’s Office highlighted the importance of radio equipment acquired through the grant: “It was a key element in getting our community back up and running after Hurricane Helene.”

Duke Energy Foundation annually provides over $30 million in philanthropic support. Funded by Duke Energy shareholders, it meets community needs where Duke Energy customers reside.

Duke Energy serves millions across several states with electric and natural gas utilities. The company focuses on energy transition with investments in grid upgrades and cleaner generation technologies.
