The School of Medicine (SOM) faculty members have recently been awarded several competitive grants, each exceeding $100,000. These projects commenced in February 2025.
Dr. Matthew Flick received funding from the NIH National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) for his research on "Novel mechanisms to limit thrombosis by decreasing fibrinogen or suppressing fibrin matrix formation." The grant amounts to $734,117 and started on February 15, 2025.
Dr. Tom Egan was granted $229,971 by the NHLBI for his work on "Novel innovative ultra-elastic and instantly adhesive hydrogel patches to prevent air leak after lung surgery," which began on February 1, 2025.
Dr. Jason Mock's project titled "The effect of endogenous and exogenous glucocorticoids acting through regulatory T cells on resolution of ALI and the contribution of host genetic variability" received a grant of $775,992 from the NHLBI with a start date of February 1, 2025.
Dr. Alisa Wolberg's study at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston focuses on "Using genomics and functional biology to understand fibrinogen and factor XIII and their effects on thrombotic diseases." This project was awarded $139,950 beginning February 1, 2025.
Dr. Alexander Rubinsteyn secured a substantial grant of $1,770,997 from the Jaime Leandro Foundation for his research into "Optimization of personalized cancer immunotherapeutic approaches," starting on February 18, 2025.
Dr. Jacquelyn Bower is exploring "A novel adeno-associated virus (AAV) gene therapy approach for the Treatment of Rare Uveal Melanoma Tumors," funded by UH Harrington Discovery Institute with an award amounting to $100,000 as of February 1, 2025.
Lastly, Dr. Barbara Savoldo is working with Arovella Therapeutics Limited on a project titled "NKTs expressing anti Claudin 18.2 CAR and IL12," which has been allocated $280,836 starting from February 10, 2025.
These awards highlight significant research initiatives being undertaken by SOM faculty in various medical fields.
