Raleigh firefighters have responded to a call for assistance from Kentucky, sending 12 members of their swift water rescue team to help with severe flooding caused by heavy rains. "We never want a disaster to happen, but if it does, our people are more than willing to jump in and hopefully make a difference," stated Chief Patrick Marks.
Flooding of the Kentucky River has severely affected the region, submerging homes, closing roads, and threatening lives. Since their arrival, Raleigh firefighters have rescued around four dozen residents and numerous animals.
The team is expected to remain in Kentucky for up to two weeks. Chief Marks acknowledged the dangerous nature of their work but emphasized its rewarding aspects. "Our firefighters have been working non-stop since arriving in Frankfort on Saturday. Their willingness to help is not only a positive reflection on the City of Raleigh, but also a reflection of the hearts of our team members out there doing the hard work."
Among their efforts, Raleigh Fire First Class firefighter Kyle Rhude and senior firefighter Jennifer Mastin have been involved in various rescues, including saving domestic chickens from perilous conditions. The community continues to rally in support of those affected by the flooding.
