Red Hat, Inc., a leading provider of open source solutions, has announced the release of Red Hat OpenShift 4.18. This latest version aims to enhance security and streamline operations across IT environments by introducing new features for both virtual machines and containers.

Mike Barrett, vice president and general manager of Hybrid Cloud Platforms at Red Hat, highlighted the significance of this release: "Many organizations have reached an inflection point with their virtualized infrastructure, needing to make decisions quickly on their future direction. Red Hat OpenShift meets today’s virtualization needs and offers a simplified pathway to migration, but also enables organizations to keep an eye on the future via application modernization."

The enhancements in Red Hat OpenShift 4.18 focus on improving networking, simplifying storage migration, and streamlining VM management. These updates aim to reduce operational complexity while enhancing flexibility and resource efficiency. Notably, VM-friendly networking now supports user-defined networks, facilitating hybrid cloud flexibility.

Additionally, the platform introduces VM storage migration as a technology preview. This feature allows non-disruptive data movement between storage devices while a VM is running. Tree-view navigation also debuts as a technology preview, offering logical grouping of VMs for easier navigation.

The update extends support to additional public cloud providers such as Google Cloud and Oracle Cloud Infrastructure. It also includes new security features like the Secret Store Container Storage Interface (CSI) driver that provides a vendor-agnostic solution for managing credentials securely.

According to Gartner's press release on top trends impacting infrastructure and operations for 2025, revirtualization/devirtualization is a significant trend this year. The enhancements in Red Hat OpenShift are designed to address these trends by simplifying management while providing common infrastructure for generative AI plans.

Red Hat OpenShift 4.18 is now generally available for users seeking enhanced virtualization experiences along with improved security measures.
