Duke Energy Florida is emphasizing its EnergyWise Home program as summer approaches, offering customers a chance to earn up to $141 in annual bill credits. This initiative involves enrolling certain appliances such as central air conditioning units, electric water heaters, and pool pumps, which the company can cycle off during high electricity demand periods.
The program aims to maintain stable rates for all Duke Energy Florida customers and preserve Florida's natural resources by reducing strain on the electric system. By doing so, the company can avoid costly power purchases from the open market and delay the need for new power plants and transmission lines.
Melissa Seixas, Duke Energy Florida state president, stated, “The EnergyWise Home program is one of the many tools we have in our energy efficiency toolbox. It’s an easy, effective way for our customers to lower their electric bills and help meet their communities’ – and Florida’s – considerable energy needs.”
Customers participating in the program have a small device installed at no cost to them. This device cycles off enrolled appliances primarily on weekdays. Electric water heaters and pool pumps can be cycled off for up to five hours while central air conditioning units are cycled off less frequently.
Approximately 430,000 customers currently participate in this program across Florida. They receive credits based on electricity usage with credits issued when usage exceeds 600 kilowatt-hours even without interruptions.
