The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality’s Division of Marine Fisheries is set to commence the renewal process for commercial fishing, seafood dealer, and for-hire licenses and permits on April 15. The Division is encouraging fishermen to complete these renewals in the months of April or May to avoid prolonged wait times typically experienced later, particularly towards the end of June.
To further minimize waiting periods, license holders have the option to renew via mail, drop-box, or by scheduling an appointment for either April or May. Priority service will be accorded to those with appointments ahead of any walk-ins.
Renewal packets are being sent to those who renewed by mail previously. These packets contain an application form along with a self-addressed, postage-paid envelope. License holders who do not receive a packet can request one for the following year during their in-person renewal process.
Any questions regarding the renewal process or scheduling appointments can be directed to local license offices, with the provided contact information. The offices are operational from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, at various locations including Morehead City, Manteo, Washington, and Wilmington.
The validity of the 2025 commercial fishing, seafood dealer, and for-hire licenses and permits extends until June 30, after which the 2026 licenses will take effect from July 1. It is important to note that the expiration for Coastal Recreational Fishing Licenses varies based on the purchase date rather than having a universal expiry date. These licenses, along with hunting licenses, can be purchased or renewed online or through the N.C. Wildlife Resource Commission.
