An invitation has been extended to media outlets to attend the inaugural meeting of the Governor’s Advisory Council on Student Safety and Well-Being. The meeting is scheduled for Monday, April 14, at the Division of Juvenile Justice headquarters in Raleigh.

Earlier this month, Governor Josh Stein established this Advisory Council via Executive Order. The mission is to foster North Carolina's commitment to providing safe, welcoming, and inclusive schools. It will propose and implement solutions that enhance school safety and improve the physical, social, and emotional well-being of students. The Council will recommend and guide state agencies, collaborate with local communities, and share best practices. A key priority is to work with the General Assembly to support school systems in implementing policies to prohibit cell phone use in classrooms.

The Advisory Council is co-chaired by Senator Sydney Batch, the Democratic leader in the Senate; Heather Smith, North Carolina's Teacher of the Year working in Haywood County; and William L. Lassiter, Deputy Secretary of the Division of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention.

The meeting will be live-streamed.
