Members of the media have been invited to attend the inaugural meeting of the Governor's Advisory Council for Student Safety and Well-Being on Monday, April 14, at the Juvenile Justice Headquarters in Raleigh.
Governor Josh Stein recently established the Advisory Council through an executive order. Its purpose is to propose and implement solutions aimed at promoting school safety and enhancing the physical, social, and emotional well-being of students in North Carolina. The council plans to advance recommendations and provide guidance to state agencies, as well as collaborate with local communities to share best practices. The first focus will be on partnering with the General Assembly to help school systems adopt policies for cell phone-free classrooms.
The Advisory Council is led by co-chairs Senator Sydney Batch, Senate Democratic Leader; Heather Smith, the North Carolina Teacher of the Year from Haywood County; and William L. Lassiter, deputy secretary of the Division of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention.
The meeting is scheduled to occur from 9 a.m. to noon and will be available for live streaming. The location of the gathering is the Juvenile Justice Headquarters, 3010 Hammond Business Place, Raleigh, NC 27699, Building 1, Room 144.
